How to Read Kindle Books

So when my last book was published, it was made available as a free Kindle download for several days.  When talking with family and friends about the promotion, I was surprised to find out how many people didn’t know you can read Kindle books right on your computer or tablet, as well as on a variety of Kindle devices.

There is a pretty good chance you own or have at least heard of the Amazon Kindle, but do you really know what it is capable of? These e-readers and tablets allow the user to download and consume media anywhere without connecting to a computer. If you love to read a number of different documents, magazines, and books, while on commutes or business trips, this device can be extremely convenient.

There are currently four different versions of the Kindle available for sale, each offering a different reading experience:

The Original Kindle

This option is the closest in both function and design to the very first Kindle. It offers a display of six inches that uses the E Ink technology from Amazon that creates the 16 level grayscale image that will not glare, even when in direct sunlight. This option operates with Wi-Fi only, so you will have to be connected to download new books. You have room for approximately 1,400 books on this device.

Kindle Fire

Offering the best of both worlds, the Kindle Fire is a kindle eBook reader and functional tablet combined. It features a 7-inch touch display and full color options. It runs with a modified version of the Android operating system, which allows you to download and run a number of different applications, just like you would do with a standard tablet.

Kindle Paperwhite

Offered with a 6-inch screen, the Kindle Paperwhite has a built in light and multipoint touchscreen. With the ability to hold over 1,000 books, you should always have plenty of reading material at your fingertips. However, it also connects to the cloud, allowing you to store thousands more media items. There is also very little betrayed with this option, since it is “snoop” proof. Also, you can easily change the font size and light by zooming and pinching.

Kindle Voyage

Considered the summit of the e-reader line offered by Amazon, the Kindle Voyage is the lightest touchscreen model in production, offering superior contrast and resolution. If you are an avid reader and love to take your Kindle along with you, the Voyage is definitely the right model for you.

Kindle-free Options

If you don’t have a Kindle, don’t worry – Amazon wants everyone to enjoy the reading experience they offer, which is why you can download the Kindle App to smartphones, computers, and other devices. There are basic versions for the type of device you have, including:

  • Kindle for PC
  • Kindle for Android Tablet
  • Kindle for Android Phone
  • Kindle for Mac
  • Kindle for Windows 8
  • Kindle for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch
  • Kindle for Samsung
  • Kindle for BlackBerry 10
  • Kindle for BalckBerry
  • Kindle for WebOS

Once you choose the version that fits you, you can browse, read and shop from the Kindle store just like you would if you were using a Kindle. This provides a great reading experience and allows you to easily read millions of books, including mine!
